Hi! Allison here :)

Fancy meeting you. A little about me: I'm a student journalist located in Ann Arbor, MI. For the past two years, I have had the honor to serve as Co-Editor-in-Chief of my school's newspaper, The Huron Emery. To be frank, as a type-A, to-do list fanatic, calendar-planning lover, journalism was never in my grand life plan. I never thought my love for writing fantasies about mermaids and fairies would evolve into a tool I could use to help amplify the voices of my community. I never thought I would have the confidence to boldly spearhead stigmatized topics like menstruation and sex onto a front page, or stepping into new realms of storytelling through pictures and multimedia. I never thought I could impact the culture and people around me so much through journalism. Yet here we are. And I'm very happy with where that is.

It would be a mistake to underestimate Allison Mi. She's a coach's favorite player. Allison is the consummate collaborator. She is sweet but she's also brave. She is kind and understands her worth. But then she channels all these strengths to complete the assignment beyond expectations. Allison is exactly the kind of person I hope continues with journalism because I can't wait to work for her.

BOBBY HAWTHORNE
Writing Instructor

It’s odd that I’ve forgotten almost everything about the Zoom workshops I’ve taught the past two or three years, but I remember Allison. At the end of the 2021 workshop, she received the class “Sparty Award.” If I could have presented five, she would have received all five.

SARA BADALAMENTE
Journalism Instructor

Allison motivated our team to submit for a national award we didn’t think we had the time to finish, but Allison marked out a plan for us using our strengths and we ended up getting third in the nation for our print edition. Because she believes, the team believes.

JOHANNA YOUNGHANS
Editor-in-Chief of Michigan Medicine Blogs

Allison has been an absolute pleasure and asset to our team here at Michigan Medicine. Impressively proactive and organized, Allison’s eagerness to learn and take on new projects is refreshing. Ranging from editing stories to match our style guide and shadowing expert interviews, to taking on writing assignments and Pinterest posts, she is always incredibly prompt and extremely reliable.

MICHAEL SUMERTON
Huron HS Assistant Principal

She has a keen eye for detail and an unwavering commitment to accuracy and fairness in their reporting. Whether she is covering a breaking news story or a more in-depth feature, Allison always brings a level of depth and insight that sets her apart from their peers.

The Emery Website Editor-in-Chief

The past two years that I’ve been on the Huron Emery have been filled with ups and downs, sharp learning curves, and unexpected challenges, but throughout it all, Allison has been a continuous figure of guidance. She’s acted as one of my most prominent mentors in both journalism and other aspects of school, and I constantly find myself looking up to and being inspired by her raw talent in writing and natural leadership abilities.
