Let's talk. period.

Honorable Mention, Front Page - Newspaper Style, Michigan Interscholastic Press Association

First Place, Feature Page or Spread, Michigan Interscholastic Press Association

For the front page, this was the first issue where we were breaking from our usual template of a rectangular dominant photo, so I really pushed myself to think outside the box, because instead of having the luxury to reference old issues for the groundwork, I had a completely blank canvas. I know, scary. Due to the sensitivity and specificity of this topic, consistent feedback from fresh eyes was especially valuable to make sure the implications we were aiming to present were not misconstrued. I had the pleasure of working with graphic designer Virginia He and Design Editor Annabelle Ye to make this bold, pink vision come true.

The backpage is always a tough one to design because of the free realm it offers. When designing this page, I was especially mindful of diversity when it comes to not just race and ethnicity, but also gender, grade level, and music group. I also pushed myself to not only design a “pretty page” but to marry reporting and design to bring a story to life through color choices, reporting angle, and photos and word choice.

Let's talk about sex.

This one is a long time dream of mine. I already knew the spread headline months before we started making the issue. The topic was bold yet so important to our teen readers. Thus, when it came to design, holding very high expectations for myself, I was stuck. But I have found that once I have an idea, inspiration comes as an easy downhill run from there. After talking to some staff members, I was very keen on playing with the idea of the “V-card.” A waterfall of ideas came to me: cards, poker, roulettes, black, red, white popped in my vision. I worked with graphic designer Kelly Park to design these four pages, and I created the infographic on the last page.

Everyone has ideas and a perspective. I learned through this design process the value of simply talking to people — even if they are not in newspaper. I reached out to the college and career counselor at our school, pitching my design idea, and asking for her thoughts. Even though she is not a designer, she was well-knowledged in the topic of students navigating post-high school life and that was more than helpful. I relayed our vision to graphic designers Virginia He and Kelly Park (including my non-artistic sketch and color choices) to bring this design to life.

Less is more. To depict the simplicity of the concept of this piece, I perused Pinterest (my favorite social media platform) for some inspiration. Deciding to play around with text wrap, I decided to go with the idea of Sarah being far away from her family, by utilizing the page to create this distance. Nothing fancy here, but sometimes that's what's most powerful.

When coming up with the idea for this back page, I knew it was just in time for the stress of exam season, so that's how this page was born. I worked with our graphic designer Kelly Park to find a symbol we thought would be representative of this phenomena. We chose balloons to depict the inverse feeling of stress through its lightweight nature. I also found it convenient as I could insert all my information in the balloons. For the Q&A section, I made sure to be mindful of the diversity of the student voices.

I collaborated with our now Social Media EIC, Sandra Fu, to create this cover. It was the first time both of us created a frontpage design that was more of a magazine style. Taking from the theme of our magazine (all aspects of body image) we wanted to epitomize on the central theme: the critique of every part of ourselves. The cover represents someone being blatantly criticized for every part of themselves, to represent the excessiveness of it. We worked with graphic designer Kelly Park to make it look like writing in a notebook.

Our design editor had showed me a very creative photo: it was an hourglass where food was stuck at the top and people hungry for the food were in the bottom half. I worked with a graphic designer (Anna Lee) to block out the page, deciding to go the non-traditional cover route, deviating from our template. We used the hourglass idea as inspiration and she wowed me with her creative take on it. With some back and forth edits here is the finished product: evocative and representative.

A local cafe, MoonWinks Cafe, generously sponsored our entire Issue 3. When selling advertisements, we give the businesses the option to either send us a graphic of theirs or have us make one. Having been a marketing lead for MoonWinks in the past, I felt confident with my familiarity in MoonWinks' core values to create an advertisement that they would appreciate.
