This was one of the first events at my school that were reopening since the pandemic started. I was excited to finally have a reason to leave my house, and I found that same energy amongst the marching band members as they stormed the field. I found what's tricky about photographing swimmers is that unless I'm in the pool, it's difficult to capture facial features and expressions, since the pool is at ground level. This was also the first sport that I photographed, so it took me a while to adjust. After looking back through the photos, I knew 5 a.m. squats to capture the perfect moment of a butterfly stroke were worth it.
